4 REASONS YOU SHOULD ALWAYS WEAR A MOTORCYCLE HELMET
- They’re required by law. In Ontario, like in the rest of Canada, motorcyclists must wear crash helmets that are fastened securely under the chin at all times. Getting caught without a helmet can lead to significant fines.
If you’re injured in a motorcycle accident and you weren’t wearing a helmet, your insurance company could refuse your claim. Furthermore, if you sue for pain and suffering caused by the accident, this could be a problem.
- They reduce the risk of head and neck injury. The most common that result from motorcycle accidents occur to the head and neck. Wearing a helmet can drastically reduce the risk of suffering from traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury or dying in an accident.
- They protect your face from road debris. It’s not something you think about until you experience it, but roads are full of flying rocks, dust and, of course, insects. In addition to being annoying, road debris can cause serious damage to your face, teeth and eyes.
- They protect you from the elements. Helmets make riding in cold or rainy weather safer and more comfortable. Even if the day is warm and sunny, a helmet will keep the sun out of your eyes, reducing glare and increasing visibility to allow you to ride safely.
How to pick the right helmet
The safest choice is a full-face helmet that covers your entire head, face and chin. Regardless of whether you opt for a full or open-face style, remember that the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario requires that motorcycle helmets conform to DOT (American) or ECE (European) standards. Helmets that meet these certifications will be marked with a sticker located on the back.
